27 December 2024The Public-Private Governance for social value creation round table, held on October 11 at Bocconi University during the Salone della CSR 2024, offered an opportunity for discussion between representatives from the business, public and association worlds. Moderated by Dr. Nadia Boschi, Head of Sustainability Italy & Continental Europe, ESG Director of Lendlease Italy, the discussion focused on the interpretation of the ‘S’ of ESG in the context of the new European regulatory framework, with an emphasis on the assessment of the social value generated.
The discussion revealed that social impact remains an ill-defined area, despite 2020 being a key year for regulation by the European Commission. Lendlease's approach with Programma 2121 demonstrates how social value can be integrated into the value generated by business. Indeed, aligning the social dimension to the core business becomes necessary to create new business opportunities.
In the round table discussion, it emerged that within urban regeneration projects, governance oriented towards the creation of shared value with the local community is crucial. Consequently, a successful business model is one that includes services involving the inhabitants and initiatives related to local needs. Furthermore, in order to ensure a lasting bond with the neighbourhood and prevent the abandonment of spaces, it is necessary to make them attractive to residents and businesses. Finally, it should not be overlooked that the creation, even spontaneous, of a community in a regeneration project can generate a significant social impact, making the neighbourhood more attractive and safer.
Public-private co-planning can also be a key element in creating social value. Collaboration between the Ministry of Justice and private entities, as in Programma 2121, has allowed the reintegration of prisoners into society, reducing recidivism and improving overall security. Therefore, integrating the social dimension into urban regeneration projects is urgent and allows putting the human being at the centre of initiatives.
The focal point of the entire debate was the need to define shared metrics and guidelines to measure the social impact created by both the public and private sectors. It emerged from the various speakers that an accurate measurement of the ‘S’ of ESG is crucial for making well-founded decisions and promoting sustainable and effective practices. This measurement is seen as an essential step for the integration of the social dimension into urban development and regeneration projects, thus ensuring an equitably distributed and lasting social value.
